People do everything to keep germs and diseases at bay. They bath, brush their teeth, wear washed clothes, sweep their home, dust out the furniture, etc. But there are some small, but significant habits which can silently breed diseases in the house.

A bathroom is considered to be a clean place in itself, due to the frequent use of soap and water. But it needs cleaning too. There are some unhygienic bathroom habits amongst people that open a safe passage for germs and bacteria to crop up in the bathroom space and directly affect the health of the members of the family. These may include intestinal bacteria, such as E. coli and Enterococcus, which may cause diarrhea.

Using Old Toothbrush

It is recommended by dentists to change your toothbrush every three months. It is because the bristles of the toothbrush may accumulate up your saliva and lead to bacterial growth at the root of bristles.

All Toothbrushes In One Cup

When all the toothbrushes for a family are kept in one small cup, their bristles tend to intermingle, which quickly transfers germs from one family member to another. It also leads to the development of slime and mold at the bottom of the cup. You must choose the holder which can separate each toothbrush or go for a wall-mounted toothbrush holder, which has a separate compartment for each toothbrush.

Living With A Mouldy Shower Curtain

A bathroom is the most comfortable place for mold to get developed because of all the moisture. The worst suffers from the mold in the bathroom are the shower curtains. Getting in contact with mold-infected shower curtain can cause severe respiratory diseases.

Not Drying Up Walk-in Baths Or Showers

Walk-in baths are convenient options for people with mobility issues. They have easy access to open doors, low-level tub entrance, and an automated seating for sit-and-bath convenience. The seat installed in the walk-in baths can home several moisture-feeding bugs and molds beneath it or at the joining edges. It happens when the bathroom is left wet after a shower. It is advisable to dry up the walk-in baths after every use.

One Hand-Towel For The Entire Family (And Even For Guests)

Sharing one hand towel, within a family is another unhygienic habit, that we don’t focus upon. Everyone has a different way of washing hands- some do it more thoroughly, while others not so much. It means you may be sharing germs by sharing one hand towel. Have a separate towel for each member of the family and wash them every once a week.

Leaving Damp Towels In The Bathroom

Leaving your wet towel, all squished up on the towel rack, causes mildew to breed rapidly. It explains that dreaded ‘towel smell.’ Always put away your wet towel and hung them out to dry.

Using Loofahs and Sponges For A Longer Time

Loofah and sponge are more prone to develop germs and bacteria because they contain your skin cells while scrubbing, which is the best food for the growth of micro-organisms. It is best to hang them to dry after every bath and change them every three months.

Dirty Doorknob And Light Switch

Anyone hardly thinks of scrubbing the doorknobs and light switches, but they are the dirtiest thing in the whole house. Because of their design, they have dirt settled right at their edges. And because everyone often touches them, the germs can get transported very rapidly. You must use an antibacterial wipe once or twice a week to clean them.

Not Scrubbing The Bathroom Floor Regularly

Unhygienic bathroom conditions can spread fungal diseases like athlete’s foot. The bathroom floor can aggravate such fungal problems since it is a breeding ground for mold and fungus due to scattered droplets of water after you come out of the shower. Do a weekly mop with disinfectant or bleach to kill most of the germs on the bathroom floor.

Well, small habits do make a huge difference. The practices mentioned above silently creep up towards the deadly diseases. And sometimes you could not notice it. Avoid these unhygienic bathroom habits and give a gift of health to yourself and your family.
